About SWaMii

In keeping with the Solid Waste Management Rules of 2008 and the guidelines stipulated thereof by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) for institutions, the Indian Institute of Science has put in place a sustainable and smart Solid Waste Management system. An initiative called SWaMII (Solid Waste Management Initiative for IISc) had been started by the Centre for infrastructure Sustainable Transportation and Urban Planning (CiSTUP) for the comprehensive management of solid waste generated within campus. In developing this model, several national and international case studies and best practices were reviewed. Further, surveys and interviews were conducted with the faculty, staff and students at the Indian Institute of Science.

The program developed has two main objectives:

  • To create a comprehensive Solid Waste Management (SWM) system for the collection, storage, treatment and disposal of Solid Waste generated on campus.
  • To segregate and channelize the waste being generated on campus for recycling, composting, energy production and incineration (of inerts) instead of landfilling.

Message from the Director

It is with great pleasure and expectation that I note the launch of scientific, sustainable, and environmentally friendly Solid Waste Management practices in the Indian Institute of Science campus.

It is significant that, being the premier institute for advanced scientific and technological research and education in India, IISc had taken a leading role in formulating for its own campus the best practices for environment and waste management. The Centre for infrastructure Sustainable Transportation and Urban Planning (CiSTUP) has taken the responsibility of putting in place the guidelines for a Solid Waste Management system. This system is envisaged to be a role model for institutions and campuses across the country.

I look forward to the cooperation of all those who study, work, and live on this campus in following and implementing the proposed Solid Waste Management guidelines.
