Biographical Sketch

Dr. Abdul Rawoof Pinjari is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and Chairman of the Centre for infrastructure, Sustainable Transportation and Urban Planning (CiSTUP), at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). He also holds a courtesy Associate Professor position at the University of South Florida (USF), where he served on the faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering from 2008 to 2017.

Dr.Pinjari’s substantive research is in the areas of passenger and freight travel demand modelling; travel behaviour analysis; public transit systems modelling and planning; land-use transport interactions; and integrated modelling of transportation systems along with other systems such as land-use, air-quality and energy consumption. His methodological research is in mathematical modelling of human choice (consumer)behaviour, including discrete choice models and discrete-continuous choice models. Dr. Pinjari has made significant contributions to advancing statistical/econometric methods for choice modelling, some of which have made way into applied travel behaviour research and regional transportation modelling practice.

Prior to joining IISc, Dr.Pinjari has been actively involved in advancing the state of travel modelling practice in Florida and Texas, particularly through the development of passenger and/or freight travel forecasting systems and interactions with the respective State Departments of Transportation. In about a decade of his faculty career in the U.S., he has secured more than 3 Million US Dollars in sponsored research from these and other agencies. He has also served as an adviser/consultant for various transportation and consumer choice modelling firms on projects involving advanced choice models.

Dr.Pinjari has published over 45 articles in international journals, over 40 articles in conference proceedings, and contributed chapters to several books in the field. He is an editorial board member of Transportation Research Part B, Transportation, Journal of Choice Modelling, and Transportation in Developing Economies; a member of the U.S. National Academies’ Transportation Research Board (TRB) committee on Transportation Demand Forecasting (ADB 40); an Executive Board Member (Secretary and Treasurer) of the International Association for Travel Behaviour Research (IATBR); a Board member of the International Steering Committee for Travel Survey Conferences (ISCTSC); a member of the Karnataka Government’s State level Task Force on Mobility; and a past member of the Florida State Model Task Force and that of a U.S. Federal Highway Administration’s peer review panel.

Dr. Pinjari has a B.Tech degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, M.S. from the University of South Florida, and Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin; all degrees in Civil Engineering and both the graduate degrees with a specialization in Transportation.
